Italian Dinner Housewarming Basket

Housewarming Welcome Basket - Italian Dinner with Wine, Tiramisu Dessert, Frying Pan, Spaghetti, and Sauce

Last September when John was 5 months old and we were living in our rental house, we finally broke ground on the property we’d owned for 6 years, a lot that we purchased right before we got married. I remember my husband calling me later that week to tell me that someone had broken ground on the lot next to ours, and with the same builder. As if the timing weren’t interesting enough, we were walking our property the next week and our future neighbors stopped by in passing to introduce themselves. I noticed they had a carseat in their car so I asked the obvious with a bit of excitement, “do you have a baby”??? Not only did they have a baby “boy”, but he was 2 months older than John! They were also renting a house while they built, so our situations couldn’t have been more similar and in sync.

We became friends on Facebook and have Facebook messaged or texted each other almost every day since our meetup. It was so fun to talk about our houses as they were being built since we were going through all of the same meetings at the same time. We’d chat about what lighting we’d picked out for each room, our paint colors, and all other things house related. Now that we’re in our house, we have play dates with our boys, followed by an occasional cocktail after they’ve gone to bed lol.

When they moved in shortly after us, I thought it would be fun to make a housewarming basket to welcome them to the neighborhood. I went with a dinner themed basket to make one night of cooking a little easier on them as they worked their way out of boxes. Not only was it a dinner theme, but I went with all things Italian, including a dessert and wine!

I picked up everything for the basket at World Market including the coolest tri-colored nests of spaghetti noodles in a bag, spaghetti sauce, an Italian wine, a frying pan, and some natural paper shredded basket filler.

I filled the frying pan with a slice from the big Tiramisu I’d made that week.

I took a picture of the basket on their doorstep and was going to text it as her way of finding out there was a basket on her doorstep. Unfortunately, I was busted by their boy, then the dog, and then them, so it didn’t go as planned, but was still a fun surprise!

Classic Cuban Mojito

Cuban Mojito Recipe

It’s not summer yet, but it sure feels like it here in Florida. I’m not sure if there is a cocktail that better defines sunny days than Cuba’s classic mojito! The mint and the lime paired with rum and club soda are so refreshing. I can tell that I am going to love sipping on cocktails this summer in our screened-in back porch. In fact, maybe I should make Cocktail Tuesdays a weekly tradition this season at Fab Fatale!

Classic Cuban Mojito

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 5 minutes

Yield: 1 Glass

Classic Cuban Mojito

Ingredients

  • 10 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 lime (cut into thirds)
  • Ice
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup (equal amounts sugar and water heated until sugar dissolves, cooled)
  • 1.5 ounces light rum
  • Club Soda
  • Lime wedge and mint sprig, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Muddle at the bottom of each glass, 10 mint leaves and 3 lime wedges. Sprinkle a bit of sugar in the bottom of the glass because the abrasive texture will release the mint oil from the leaves.
  2. Fill each glass with ice, top with simple syrup, rum, and then club soda and give a good stir with a long spoon. Garnish with a lime wedge and a sprig of mint.

Happy Manicure Mondays everyone. I hope you all had a great weekend! Mine was more productive that restful, but it’s really nice to have so many things marked off of my never ending to-do list. We are still trying to get situated in our new house and trying to get out of those last few boxes that we’ve just been too busy to unpack. Nutella Fruit & Pastry Cups

my all time favorite desert, my husband begs for it - nutella, fruit, strawberries, bananas, whip cream, chocolate sauce, crepes, puffed pastry

This is the dessert my husband begs for lol. It’s by far my favorite dessert because who doesn’t LOVE Nutella, especially mixed with fruit, whip cream, and chocolate syrup in a puffed pastry cup. YUM!

A few years ago, my sister and I went to a local crepe restaurant and we picked up a dessert crepe that was beyond delicious! It also was stuffed with bananas, strawberries, whip cream, Nutella, and covered with a drizzle of chocolate syrup. When we got home, my sister recreated the dessert, except with easy store bought puffed pastry sheets. If you ever try a recipe from my site, this should be the one!

Nutella Fruit & Pastry Cups

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes

Yield: 9 Pastry Cups

Nutella Fruit & Pastry Cups

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet frozen puffed pastry, thawed
  • 1 banana, chopped
  • 4-5 strawberries, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon confections sugar
  • 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup
  • 1 can whip cream

Instructions

  1. Cut the puffed pastry sheet into thirds, horizontally and vertically, making 9 squares total, either with a knife or a pizza cutter. Line 9 holes of a muffin tin with the pastry, pressing it against the sides and bottom to form a cup shape. Bake for about 10 minutes at 350, or until lightly golden brown.
  2. While the pastry is baking, chop the bananas and strawberries. Mix the fruit evenly with confections sugar.
  3. Once the puffed pastry is out of the oven, use a spoon to press the cups open. While the pastry is still warm, line each cup with Nutella (I'm a little heavy handed with the Nutella). Pop the cups out of the muffin tin with a spoon and onto a plate.
  4. Top with fruit, whip cream, and then a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Top 12 Most Pinned At Fab Fatale

1K Pins - Oh my sweet baby boy's birth announcement usually lives at the top of my trending list in the sidebar, which makes me so happy because I get to see his cute face every time I visit my site. It's the newest post in this list, so over time, I think it may win "most pinned".

1K Pins - This feather manicure went absolutely VIRAL at my thelooksforless.com blog (sold last year) sending over 10,000 in one day! There were no other feather manis (Google search) at the time using feathers rather than paint, and this how-to has been stolen and copied SO many times!

1K Pins - I keep this lasagna alfredo rollups recipe in regular rotation at my house and love to make it for company. The original recipe was vegetarian, so the meat is optional, but I love it with the addition of Italian sausage or chicken. These lasagna roll ups are huge and SO good!

1K Pins - I love lace nails for a girl's night out! This was my very first "non-polish" manicure. At the time, there were no other blogs featuring a lace mani tuturial, only an ad that I recreated (can't find the ad url), but now there are several nearly identical tutorials ;)

2K Pins - This slow cooker chicken tiki masala is pure comfort food in a bowl. Although the origin of this dish is Indian, chicken tikka masala is said to be the most popular dish in British restaurants, dubbed “a true British national dish”. The creamy orange sauce is tomato based with just a kick of spice.

3K Pins - This 4th of July manicure from 2012 took a bit of time and a bit of tape, but I LOVE the way it turned out! Check out the post for a super easy version of this mani, or see my 4th of July nails from 2013 for another easy, yet super spirited mani.

3K Pins - I recreated my popular Chanel Haute Couture nail art (coming soon in the countdown) in contrasting shades of blue for autism awareness month last year. This is such a fun and beautiful mani for a good cause that's very near and dear to my heart!

4K Pins - There have been several occasions when I would go to purchase a necklace online and have no idea where the length would come to on my neckline. This necklace lengths diagram removed all of the guesswork for me. Other diagrams include formal and informal table settings.

6K Pins - When the first pics of Chanel's Haute Couture Fall 2012 runway manicure started surfacing, I couldn't wait to recreate the look. This nail art turned out to be way more simple than I imagined and it's fun to recreate in other colors for a good cause or to show your team spirit.

10K Pins - I spent a couple of months looking for the perfect nail polish storage for my ever growing collection. I wanted clear storage so I could see everything, drawers for easy access, and a height no taller than my tallest bottles and these shoe drawers were perfect!

15K Pins - I don't think I knew about "the magic hour" when I took this gold sequins over a light pink cream polish pic. I just ran to the back of my yard to the one sunbeam left of the day and I LOVE the way it played off the gold sequin glitter. This was also my intro to sequined glitter that became huge shortly after.

25K Pins - Wow, coming in at over 25k is my most pinned and most controversial post. Who knew mani swatches could be controversial? Check out my Butter London S/S 2012 swatches, and then read all about the backlash.

Pinterest has a cool new feature for bloggers that allows us to check out our most pinned pages. I thought it would be fun to do a little compilation post showcasing my “best of” according to Pinterest. Some of these posts would probably be higher, but they originated at my thelooksforless.com blog before I sold it and moved the posts here. Their social numbers started fresh here after the move with a brand new url.

It was so fun to take a trip down memory lane with these pins. I’m still trying to improve my photography skills, but looking at some of these old posts is a fun reminder that I’m getting better. For the most part, I had an idea of what’s popular based on the few posts that live in my “Trending” block at the right sidebar, but there were a few surprises. Click around in the slideshow above to check out my Top 12 Most Pinned!

Keep up with all my pins as I pin them at Pinterest ;)

Bing In The Classroom

Technology is changing so quickly these days and it’s amazing what kids are learning in school. I didn’t even take a computer course until middle school, and that course had nothing to do with the internet lol! Kiddos are learning at such a rapid pace, much of which involves the use of computers and searching the internet on a daily basis. I know when my toddler is old enough to search the web (he already knows how to swipe my phone!), I want his search results to be safe and ad free.

Luckily, Bing in the Classroom has a safe search engine for kids! The search engine allows students to retrieve safe, ad free results – all advertising is removed, there are strict filters for adult content, and enhanced privacy protections! Say “YES” to show your support for #adfreesearch!.

In addition to ad free, safe searching, did you know that you can earn Bing Rewards just for searching the internet? What’s more exciting than earning points for searching is that Bing In The Classroom allows you to donate those rewards so that schools may earn Surface tablets for their students! It’s all as easy as 1, 2, 3!

  1. Get free Surface tablets in your classroom – It’s easy! Anyone can earn rewards just by searching the web with Bing.
  2. Support ad-free search – With just one click, join parents across the country to support ad-free search in the classroom.
  3. Find your school – Find out how close your school is to earning a free Surface tablet.

Bing in the Classroom is an ongoing program focused on helping kids use technology to inspire and satisfy their curiosity. It provides ad-free, safe, more private search in schools, daily lesson plans that inspire critical thinking, and a rewards program that community members can use to earn tablets for their schools.

I’m required to disclose a sponsored partnership between our site and Bing. I have been compensated in exchange for this post in the form of payment, product or experiences.
