Manicure Mondays – Ombre Nails

Ombre Nails - Ombre Manicure

Happy Manicure Mondays! I hope you all had a great weekend! We’re hoping to put our house on the market soon, so my Saturday and Sunday was filled with spring cleaning in the summer. We’re going through the “edit” phase right now, which means we’ll be piling things in boxes and putting it all in storage until our house sells. Fun, right lol?!?! Wish us luck!

Today I am excited about the first of many fun summer manicures I have planned for you all. I wanted to do a few neon and neutral summer manicures, so I thought the first up should be ombre nails. First, I used two coats of Essie Sand Tropez, followed by a layer of dry fast top coat. I let it dry pretty good before going on to the next step so that the mani doesn’t get too goopey when I press on the gradient effect.

Next, put a big blob of the Sand Tropez on a paper plate right next to a big blob of NYX Neon Mania Yellow nail polish. Mix the colors, only in the middle, with a toothpick. Press a triangle cosmetic sponge into the polish on the plate, and then roll the sponge across your nails {as you’d do with nail stamping}, with the neon color at the tip of your nails. Do this a few times until you get the level of neon at the tips that you’d like. Let it dry for a couple of minutes to prevent smudging, then top with a quick dry top coat. This will smooth out any of the sponged texture.

So what do you all think of my ombre nails. Is this a manicure you’d like to try? It’s pretty dang easy, and I LOVE the effect!

Manicure Mondays – Chanel Couture Fall 2012 Nail Art

Chanel Haute Couture Fall 2012 Nail Art Manicure

For the first time ever, Chanel does nail art at their Haute Couture Fall 2012 runway show. This silver and bubble gum pink outline moon manicure is so beautiful and couldn’t be more simple. For those of you that think nail art isn’t for short nails, I chopped mine to show that you can definitely get the look.

First, I started with one coat of China Glaze Millenium silver nail polish. For this coat, you want to get the polish as close to your cuticles and the sides of your nails as possible. If you need a little help painting, check out my how to paint your nails tutorial.

Next, paint a layer of bubble gum pink over the silver, leaving a spaced outline all the way around your cuticles and sides of your nails. It’s best if you use a wide round brush for fewer strokes, so I went with Pink Friday, from the Nicki Minaj for OPI collection. After you’ve allowed this coat to dry a bit to prevent smudging, finish with a heavy coat of dry fast top coat to even off the layers.

Manicure Mondays – Ruby Tips

Manicure Mondays - Ruby Tips Stippling Dots Nails

Happy Manicure Mondays! I hope you all had an amazing weekend!

After swatching two collections two weeks in a row, I was eager to do a little nail art so I decided to go for a double-edition of Manicure Mondays today. In the spirit of the Nicole by OPI post I had just finished up, I decided to use a couple of monochromatic {pink on pink} colors from that collection.

My friend Trina taught me how to do nail dots a while back, also known as a stippling manicure, and I haven’t used this technique since my JewelMint inspired Midas Touch manicure. To get this look, I started with a clear base coat followed by two layers of Paparazzi Don’t Preach, a Nicole by OPI Kardashian Kolor. Next, using the white tool from my manicure dotting tool set, I added one row of dots along the tip of my nails with Nicole by OPI’s Shoot for the Maroon, a beautiful shimmery ruby red nail polish. I liked the single row, but decided to go for gradient tip nails by adding another row using the smaller end of the white dotting tool. Top with a quick dry top coat to seal and add shine.

Dotting Tool Tips – Remove the nail polish brush from the bottle and put a good size blob on a paper plate. Dot the tool in the polish on the plate and then lightly touch onto your nail. The lighter the touch the smaller the dot, so I always start out pressing lightly because you can always press harder if you’d like a larger dot, but you can’t make a larger dot smaller without starting over {obvi lol}.

So what do you all think of my Ruby Tips mani? Is this something you would try?

Happy Manicure Mondays! I hope you all had a great weekend! I’m so excited to share a fun springtime mani with you all. My friend Trina and I swap mani/beauty/diy ideas {and everything else that interests us} all the time. This week, she wanted to do a caviar manicure {the microbead manicure kit made popular by Ciate that sells for £18.00), and I wanted to do a juicy fruity manicure for spring, so we combined the two ideas in a link up. The black caviar manicure by Ciate was great for fall, but Trina’s raspberry/orange and my lemon/lime manicures are perfect for the beautiful warm weather we’ve been having lately.

I was beyond excited to do a lemon/lime caviar manicure, but after an exhaustive search around town, I could not find yellow microbeads anywhere! Trina and I both picked up the Martha Stewart glass microbead set and Trina’s husband had the bright idea of using the clear microbeads over the yellow nail polish which worked out perfectly. Our husbands come in so hand sometimes! Although the pack had green microbeads, to keep the look consistent, I used clear for the green accent nail as well. I thought it turned out great, so if you’d rather save your money, just invest in clear microbeads, since they take on the nail polish color under them quite nicely.

To get the look, I used shimmer creme nail polishes for the yellow and green to go along with my juicy fruity theme. For the yellow, I used Revlon Electric {last seen here in my Chanel Mimosa dupe comparison} and for the green, I used Julep Leah {check out my Julep Maven review}, a really pretty grassy green. I painted all of my nails, except for my accent nail, and sealed with Seche Vite’s Dry Fast Top Coat. Next, I applied a really thick layer of polish to my accent nail, and before it had a chance to dry, I quickly sprinkled my microbeads all over the nail with a bowl under my hand to catch the fall out. Press the beads into your nail very lightly. You want them to adhere well, but you don’t want to goop up your polish. I didn’t apply a top coat to my beads because I didn’t want to kill the sparkle, however, if you want this mani to last longer than a day or two, I would suggest sealing it with a topcoat.

So what do you think of my lemon/lime caviar nails? Is this a manicure you would try?
