Sydney’s Baby Girl Nursery – Room Reveal c/o Havenly

in a field of roses, she is a wildflower, that was the inspiration behind my baby girl nursery, featuring a lotus chandelier, pink polka dot decal ceiling, white dipped baskets, butterfly, flamingo, and feather prints, penguin bookends, and a unicorn. i love her magical space!

I am beyond excited to be working with Havenly again, an affordable online interior decorating service, this time for Sydney’s baby girl nursery. Two years ago, they designed John’s Surf Shack toddler room, so I had hoped that one day, they’d be able to design another nursery for me. Today, I am so happy to share Sydney’s beautiful, magical space with you all.

I asked my Havenly designer Shelby G. for a room that was “whimsical”, rather than going with a theme as I did for John’s surf shack, and offered several examples of inspiration from Pinterest. However, right before the concepts came in, I heard a quote that is SO very Sydney… “in a field of roses, she is a wildflower”. She has dark brown curly hair, pretty blue eyes, loves to laugh and waves at anything and everything (this Instagram defines my baby girl lol). She is not a perfect rose, but the prettiest little wildflower.

A couple of months ago, I shared Sydney’s concepts and requested your vote. Although it was a tough choice, the majority {perhaps with a bit of influence on my part} chose the room more fit for my sassy silly Sydney. The concept with the deep saturated colors and a lotus chandelier was perfect for my wildflower in a abstract way, rather than a room filled with floral patterns.

Room Renderings

I saved the room renderings for today, the final reveal, so I could surprise you with all the final details. Childproofing was key for Sydney’s nursery. There are a few items that give a room a well designed look, like floor lamps and side tables; however, once a baby starts pulling up on everything, these can easily tip so they were on my exclude list. The challenge was to create a space with a designer look and feel, without the easy designer go-tos that are far from child friendly. And while I wanted the room to be exciting and colorful, I still wanted it to fit in with the rest of our traditional home that emphasizes comfort over style.

The Ceiling – Our Conversation Piece

With my “whimsical” style request in mind, I also wanted this room to have a wow factor. Something that gets noticed and talked about when we have friends over. The polka dot ceiling and lotus chandelier exceeded my “wow” expectations!

The chandelier! Oh how I love this chandelier. We initially found a look for less style lotus chandelier, but after several online purchases, I ended up with boxes of broken capiz shells. They were packed terribly. They also didn’t have a hinged bottom to cover the base, so in a small space, you are often looking directly at the bulb.

This capiz lotus chandelier, however, has my heart! The Lotus Flower Chandelier by Roost, courtesy of Viesso, an online destination for customization, modern technology, smart design, and sustainable living, features hand-cut capiz shells that have been edged in a beautiful silver metal. The chandelier, also available in smoke, has been arranged to create the appearance of a stained-glass window, is available in two sizes, and features an opening for easy bulb changing. This lotus chandelier is striking and a beautiful way to add the perfect amount of light into our space.

I found the polka dots decals over at PolkaDotWallStickers.com. Not only do they have so many colors and sizes to choose from, they were also by far the most affordable. They are very honest and warned me against dots on a ceiling, especially if the ceiling is textured or you live in a state with high humidity (I’m in Florida lol), but I was willing to take a risk and appreciated their honesty.

Once I pressed the polka dots onto the ceiling, they took on the same light texture, which made them look painted on, rather than decals. I loved the effect. I also had to move a few and they were attached very well. At first I thought I wanted to lay them out in an organic way, but I decided that a diagonal pattern would be much more stylish. I have a “how-to polka dot ceiling” tutorial coming very soon. It was a labor of love that involved quite a bit of math, but so worth the effort.

My first item of discussion with Havenly, the dresser, was my main priority as we were desperate for a functional space. I needed a dresser right away because we were living out of an open shelved changing table that was collecting dust and could easily tip. Sydney was also ripping everything folded off the shelves, so it had to go ASAP! I opted for a heavy duty traditional style dresser, the Bermuda Dresser courtesy of Joss & Main, strapped to the wall for further safety, found a convertible changing top in matching white, and replaced the knobs with a little sparkle for extra whimsy. I wanted a dresser placed next to a glider, so it could serve as a side table, rather than a table that can tip. This dresser is so functional because it has lots of drawers, perfect for organizing all of those baby clothes and blankets.

The glider is a DREAM! We used a wood porch-style rocking chair for two years with John, and for nearly a year with Sydney. With only a year left of rocking, I almost opted against the glider to spend our budget elsewhere, but it is SO WORTH IT! For all of the hours and all of the nights that we still have left, this Delta glider, also courtesy of Joss & Main, in sand is a must-have. Now that Sydney is old enough, I find myself dozing off with her because it’s just so dang comfy. This is also my spot for watching the kids play, and probably will be well after we’ve retired it for night-time rocking. The mint pouf, topped with a fun hot pink herringbone throw, courtesy of Layla Grayce, allows me to recline and glide as she drifts off to sleep and this gorgeous custom yellow fringe and beaded pillow by Taisa Silecky at Etsy helps me prop her head as she drinks her bottle.

To add whimsy to this space, Shelby rounded up a collection of wall art from my favorite affordable art retailers, Society6 and Minted. In what other world could we feature a pink flamingo, gold butterfly, and penguin bookends, and yet they work together so well in this space! This off-beat collection of whimsical creatures is perfectly suited for my baby girl. And with the wildflower theme in mind, my contribution to her art space was this “in a field of roses, she is a wildflower” print, offered recently as a free printable.

Sleep and Play

The crib was my first purchase a year ago and Havenly was happy to work my existing furniture into their design. I love that this Ti Amo Palazzo convertible crib will eventually transform into a toddler and then full-size day bed. I’m getting a lot of bang for my buck since I won’t have to buy all of these beds separately, and I love that it will keep the design in tact for years to come.

What do you do with all that space between a crib and a wall? Fill it with bookshelves and baskets for tons of stylish storage! I found traditional style white wall bookshelves to coordinate with the traditional dresser and filled them with books and fun whimsical bookends. The baskets store nicely beside the crib and can be pulled out for play time. Sydney loves digging through for her favorite toys and then they are stored away when she’s ready to move on to another space. I searched hi-and-low for the perfect sized white dipped basket and found a beautiful set. The other two are serving up additional storage in my office.

This gorgeous Naya rug, courtesy of Joss & Main, featuring shades of deep yellow, blue, pink, orange, ivory and red pulls this entire space together and is the main reason that I went with this Havenly concept. The saturated “wildflower” like colors are so beautiful and so fun! These colors look great on Sydney, so I thought she would look great in this room.

Our room is dimmed for nap-time thanks to Blindster’s blackout roller shades. Most bulk retailers {Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, etc.} sell up to 60″ in height for their window shades, but we exceed this by 10″. Shopping custom shades can get so expensive, but luckily I discovered Blindster when I searched roman shades for John’s room. Their custom window coverings are far less expensive, super high quality, and they have sales all the time. Their customer support couldn’t be more helpful. I picked up their premium blackout shades in Twilight Arctic white.

Thank You

I wanted to extend a very appreciative and sincere thank you to all of my sponsors. I didn’t want to limit Shelby’s creativity, so I did not seek any sponsors before we started the design process. Once she made her selection of products best suited for our space, I reached out to the following amazing merchants and they were kind enough to donate to our project – first and foremost, Havenly, for this amazing nursery design, Joss & Main {dresser, rug, glider and bud vases, all under $1,000}, Viesso, Polka Dot Wall Stickers, Taisa Silecky, Blindster, Minted, Society6, and Layla Grayce!
